Cambodia – Battambang & The Killing Cave
Cambodia – Battambang & The Killing Cave – The Backpacking Wayfarers
We were only in Battanbang less than 24 hours, but the family that runs Hotel Royal made it easy to get the most from our short visit. The rooftop restaurant with jacuzzi! Best amok I have had so far. The next morning one of the family members gave us a tuk-tuk tour of the countryside and an Angkor-era archeological site south of town, and they arranged our transportation to Siem Reap. A full-service experience in an extremely clean and comfortable hotel. We actually didn't like Phnom Penh at all, but this hotel was great for what we needed while there. We booked the room with the balcony - only downside being that the balcony looks like it's just for the whole floor to use so at 2am we had people sitting on it chatting loudly right outside our room window and smoking.
King Fy Hotel, Battambang
Battambang is Cambodia 's second most populous city, and a popular tourist destination due to the nearby ancient temples, the circus, and the bamboo railway. It is the capital of Battambang Province. Despite being Cambodia's second largest city, Battambang is often overlooked in favor of the more popular Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Battambang is quieter, less commercial and cheaper, and provides an opportunity to see a slightly less Westernized Cambodian city. Remnants of French colonial architecture can be spotted around the city, and there are food and lodging options that will cater to most budgets and tastes.
After a 3 hour, and actually surprisingly comfortable, shared mini-bus ride from Siem Reap, we arrived in the dusty and hot town of Battambang. After reading many other posts from fellow travel bloggers, who had been here before us, we expected a dirty town that was just good for a night or two to explore the surrounding attraction — The Killing Cave. Read it here. The seats are decent and you will not feel too cramped.
